MSC Cruises has opened an investigation after a fire broke out in a lifeboat aboard MSC Lirica in Corfu, Greece.

Emergency services received a call from the ship at 15:40 local Greek time this Friday (March 12) to deal with the fire, which MSC said had originated in one of its fiberglass lifeboats on the starboard side.

Videos and images posted on social media showed flames and black smoke billowing from the vessel, which is currently on the Greek island.

The incident was reported to MSC's Maritime Support Center in London and the fire was brought under control and declared over shortly before 7 p.m. (local time). There were no injuries among the 51 crew members on board the ship at the time.

MSC said a preliminary assessment indicated that there was no damage inside the vessel and a full investigation into the incident is now underway.
