International Habanosommelier Contest: Five Contenders Vie for the Crown

This year’s Habano Festival is jam-packed with new things, including the exclusivities at the International Habanosommelier Contest, whose 6th edition teed off Monday with five contenders who will battle for the title as they boast their skills and knowledge as far as Habanos are concerned.

Jesús E. Chacón from Cuba; Krystian Hordejuk from the United Arab Emirates; Slavomir Marek Bielicki from the UK; Andrea Balzani from Italy, and Felipe Rojas from Chile will be pitted against one another in this year’s contest.

To start things off, there was a blindfolded tasting session in which each contender drank from five different cups to determine the aging level of the five different spirits. Two points could be scored for each correct answer and four points for each cup for a final maximum tab of 20 points in 20 minutes.

Representatives from Cuba, Chile and Italy competed Monday, while the contenders from the United Kingdom and the UAE will have their chance Tuesday. The grand finale is slated for Friday, March 3.
