The 8th Conference on Sustainable Development in the Caribbean will be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, next year, organizers announced on Friday.

A Puerto Rican delegation attending the seventh such conference here explained that initiatives in the use of natural resources and environmental protection are expected to be discussed by ministers, hoteliers, experts and business people in the meeting scheduled to be held by late 2006.

Puerto Rican tourism expert Ivelisse Maria Gaya told Prensa Latina news agency that special attention will be given to the link between tourism resources and quality of life, as the former are very limited in the tiny Caribbean territories.

“We also intend to place emphasis on the importance of tourism as the region´s driving force of economic development, promoting an active participation of all sectors including commerce, industry, NGOs and the population,” she said.

She added that sustainability will be stressed as the basis for quality of life.
