More than 1.1 million tourists visited Peru’s world renowned Inca city of Machu Picchu making it one of Peru’s most visited tourist attractions in 2015, says the sanctuary’s chief, Juan Carlos Nieto.

“The exact number of visitors will be announced this week. In 2014, 1,100,000 visitors were registered. We know there was an increase in 2015; thus it’s very likely the figure was exceeded,” the official told Andina news agency.

He said the Inca city is Machu Picchu’s heart. Thus, he hoped travellers will visit other diverse complexes located within the 37,000-hectare site.

It must be noted the natural protected zone shelters 4,187 species (among flora and fauna) and 12 ecological systems.

In this sense, a series of multi-sectorial campaigns will be launched to promote new routes and attractions found in the area, which was declared a historic sanctuary 35 years ago.
