The Thai government has officially announced a significant modification to its international mobility policy, cutting the maximum visa-free stay period from 60 to 30 days for citizens of 59 countries. The regulatory adjustment, scheduled to take effect on September 15, forms part of a broader administrative strategy designed to balance attractive tourist inflows with enhanced national security and stricter border management.
The new policy, ratified following official publication under the administration of prime minister and interior minister Anutin Charnvirakul, aims to adapt travel privileges to current economic realities while curbing potential abuses of short-term entry frameworks. Regional trade analysts note that the adjustments also support ongoing diplomatic negotiations directed at securing reciprocal visa exemptions for Thai citizens across international jurisdictions.
To prevent irregular border practices commonly known as visa runs, the updated directive stipulates that affected visitors arriving via land crossings will be restricted to a maximum of 2 visa-exempt entries per calendar year. Specific regional exemptions will remain active for passport holders originating from neighboring partners, including Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, and Singapore.
For international visitors requiring extended holiday or remote work arrangements exceeding the new 30-day threshold, authorities continue to promote the alternative Destination Thailand Visa. This multi-entry permit offers a validity of 5 years, permitting continuous stays of up to 180 days upon satisfying financial solvency requirements and employment verification standards.
With the tourism sector contributing 13% of the national Gross Domestic Product and supporting 12% of domestic employment, policymakers emphasize that safeguarding sustainable growth is vital. As the country projects welcoming over 33.5 million foreign visitors, these balanced regulatory updates ensure long-term stability for its premier hospitality economy.
