China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced preparations to resume group tours to Taiwan from Shanghai and Fujian province, signaling a potential thaw in travel restrictions between the two regions. Taiwan has welcomed the move but emphasized the need for mutual cooperation to fully normalize cross-strait exchanges.

The resumption of group tours comes after prolonged disputes following the COVID-19 pandemic, during which both sides blamed each other for delays in reopening travel. While Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory, Taipei firmly rejects these sovereignty claims, further complicating relations.

According to China’s tourism ministry, the decision to restart group travel aims to promote "people-to-people exchanges" and improve the well-being of residents on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. However, no specific date for the reopening has been provided.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council responded positively, urging Beijing to coordinate details through existing communication channels. The council emphasized the importance of enhancing tourism while maintaining respect for Taiwan's autonomy.

Tensions have remained high, with Taipei raising its travel warning for China last year, advising its citizens to avoid unnecessary trips due to threats from Beijing, including potential actions against individuals deemed supporters of Taiwan independence.

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office called on Taipei to lift the travel warning and resume all direct travel links between the two regions, highlighting the importance of fostering smoother exchanges.

This development comes amid broader geopolitical challenges, but the resumption of group tourism could mark a step toward improved cross-strait relations, fostering economic and cultural ties between China and Taiwan.
