500th Anniversary of Camaguey in Excelencias Magazine’s Special Issue

A special issue thoroughly illustrated and documented of the Excelencias magazine highlights the 500th anniversary of Camaguey, the former village of Santa Maria del Puerto del Principe, as named by founding Spanish conquistador Don Diego Velazquez.

The Excelencias Group’s flagship publication, specialized in covering, spreading, promoting and publicizing Caribbean and Iberian-American countries, is following up on the celebration for the five centuries of the island nation’s heritage cities, an observance that teed off in 2011 in Baracoa and continued last year with Bayamo and Trinidad.

The image of the larger-than-life water earthenware pot ingrained in the piece of an imaginary church window shaped like an arch with a V numeral overlapped in it, coupled with the silhouette of the Iznaga Tower of Trinidad, make up the cover of this special issue of the Excelencias magazine.

Traditions, customs and legends reel off in this documented issue dedicated to Camaguey, with such other highlights as the local architecture, valuable heritage buildings, the local farming and industrial activity, the most original sample of its gastronomy –including pastry- the fine arts, handicrafts in each and every form of expression, let alone the city’s countless shrines, temples, monasteries and churches that treasure a priceless collection of religious art. All this much is showcased as a token of local collective creations crafted by men and women who are proud of their roots.

These contents are also the centerpiece of issue 120 of the Excelencias magazine, which was distributed at the recently-concluded International Tourism Fair (FITUR 2014) held in Spain’s Madrid on January 22-26, and where the celebrations for the 500th anniversary of Camaguey grabbed headlines in this special issue –largely acclaimed by tour operators and travel agents from around the world that attended the Spanish tradeshow.
