Stanley Palm, Curacao’s minister of economic development, said on Thursday that, on November 7, Air Canada will start weekly direct flights to and from Toronto. As of January 2015, the Canadian airline will also start direct flights to and from Montreal.

Director of the Curacao Tourist Board, Hugo Clarinda, noted that the Canada route has already grown by 30%, and thus the country is the fourth largest market for Curacao, after the Netherlands, the US and Venezuela.

Clarinda also hoped that, with the extra flights, the island can halt the decline in visitor numbers, especially after the local airline Dutch Antilles Express (DAE) went bankrupt.

Palm is also in talks with other airlines and hoped to be able to say more about these negotiations within two weeks.
