The 2012 Cancun Travel Mart broke its previous attendance record by 15 percent, with more than 20 countries represented by 685 delegates, including 308 buyers and 376 suppliers. Officials also said that 4,312 business meetings took place at Cancun Travel Mart. The conference, held from Oct. 15 to 17 in Cancun, celebrated its 25th year.

“Twenty-five years ago, we had a little over 850,000 visitors in Cancun, and this year, with your help, we will have close to 5 million tourists,” Cancun Hotel Association President Rodrigo de la Pena told delegates attending the conference. In 1988, the destination has just 14,000 rooms, with the count climbing to 34,000 today, and close to 82,000 in the state of Quintana Roo, where Cancun is located. “Quintana Roo will [comprise] almost 50 percent of Mexico’s tourism income,” de La Pena said, thanking delegates for their contributions.

“We thank our business partners and the industry at large for the success of the 25th edition of the Cancun Travel Mart,” said Jesus Almaguer, director general of the Cancun Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This event has strengthened over the last 25 years, making it one of the most important industry events in Mexico and Latin America.”

Tour operators and travel agents in attendance came from the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, France, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Paraguay, Peru, Spain, England, Russia and Venezuela. In Mexico, delegates in attendance came from Quintana Roo, the Yucatan, Puebla, Guerrero and Mexico City.
