Carnival Cancels Upcoming Cruise Calls in Mazatlan

Due to recent security incidents in Mazatlan, Carnival Cruise Lines decided to cancel upcoming calls there on the Carnival Splendor and Carnival Spirit as a precautionary measure. “We are working closely with the Mexican government and local officials to review their plans to improve security in all of the main tourist areas,” Carnival said. “Once we are comfortable with their plans and implementation, we expect to return to Mazatlan. We are hopeful that this process can be completed within a short period of time.”

Carnival joins other cruise lines in avoiding Mazatlan, which in late January experienced a spurt in crimes against cruise passengers near the port. After local officials promised heightened security, several lines returned, but then began cancelling calls again after a Feb. 22 shooting in the hotel zone.

Alternate itineraries for Carnival Splendor’s seven-day cruises call for Mazatlan to be replaced by an additional visit to Cabo San Lucas. On the Carnival Spirit’s nine-day voyage of March 11, Mazatlan and Ensenada will be replaced with a second call in Cabo San Lucas and a call at Manzanillo. On Carnival Spirit’s seven-day cruise of March 20, Mazatlan would be replaced by a second day in Cabo San Lucas.
