Cuba to Build over 4,000 Guestrooms in Havana, Camaguey

Cuba’s Cubanacan group is currently in the process of establishing nine joint ventures with foreign hotel chains for the construction of 4,000 rooms in Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Lucia, a couple of beaches located in the Havana and Camagüey provinces, respectively.
According to Cubanacan VP Maria Isabel Gonzalez, the portfolio of opportunities includes a dozen other projects that will involve the creation of new joint ventures for the development of hotels in Covarrubias (Las Tunas), Havana and Santa Lucia.
According to Mrs. Gonzalez, a dozen other proposals under hotel management contracts, which are very much in line with the intention to raise the standards in the presentation of services of Cuban facilities, will also be in the works through those joint ventures.
Founded in 1987, Cubanacan runs more than 90 hotels in Cuba, some of them operating jointly with prestigious international chains, such as Meliá, Blau, Iberostar, Breezes and Blue Diamond.
Official data show that there are 25 joint ventures related to Cuba’s travel industry and 82 hotel management contracts with 19 foreign managers for a grand total of 41,000 guestrooms, which accounts for 62 percent of the country’s existing portfolio.
