Disney Cruise Line Cancels Calls at Mazatlan, Mexico
Disney Cruise Line is cancelling the Disney Wonder’s calls at Mazatlan, Mexico, due to the “changing environment. “We are modifying our seven-night Mexican Riviera itinerary aboard the Disney Wonder by replacing calls to Mazatlan with an additional call to Cabo San Lucas until further notice,” the company said in a statement. “As you are probably aware, we continually evaluate our itineraries, and the decision to modify this itinerary was made in part due to the changing environment in Mazatlan. Clearly, safety is very important to us and we believe this change is necessary in order to provide our guests with the best family vacation experience.”
The company did not specify what exactly has changed about the environment, but a Canadian tourist was shot Jan. 17 when he was caught in the crossfire of a gang shooting. The 69-year-old retiree is recovering, and the Mazatlan Tourism Board said it will cover his costs, according to the Vancouver Sun. There also have been reports of lesser crimes near the port.
The Disney Wonder’s new itinerary now has it visiting Cabo San Lucas on Thursday instead of Mazatlan, in addition to a half-day on Friday in Cabo.
In a statement, the Mazatlan Tourism Trust said Mazatlan is regarded as one of the safest destinations in Mexico. “Tourism is very important to Mazatlan and its residents. The destination plays host to nearly 2 million visitors from all over the world and the number has increased steadily for the past five years. Additionally, nearly 9,000 U.S. and Canadian citizens have made Mazatlan their permanent or seasonal home between October and April,” the statement said. “The areas of concern are not the beach resorts or historical sites that visitors come here to see, but rather the northern border towns far from the city. Reports of visitors being accosted or injured in the destination are extremely rare. Mazatlan will continue to ensure that travelers here find a warm, welcoming destination in which their comfort and security is, as always, top priority.”
