Excelencias Group Unveils Special Issue on Fiesta del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba

A special moment for both celebration and cultural reflection was the delivery of the Excelencias Awards to the Tourism Ministry Delegation in Santiago de Cuba, the Casa del Caribe, the Provincial Assembly of the People's Power and the Office of the City Curator, held within the framework of the 15th anniversary of the Excelencias Group in Cuba. The function was coupled with the launch of issue 116 of the Excelencias magazine as part of the events during the Fiesta del Fuego celebration in Santiago de Cuba.

The Excelencias Awards recognize efforts conducted in different sectors by the abovementioned institutions in the restoration of heritage values in Santiago de Cuba, tourism promotion in the city and the refurbishment of it following the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy last year.

The Excelencias Awards were presented by Jose Carlos de Santiago, president and editor-in-chief of the Excelencias Group, to Marisol Rodriguez, MINTUR delegate in Santiago de Cuba; Vicente Gonzalez, deputy president of the Provincial Assembly of the People's Power; Orlando Verges, director of the Casa del Caribe, and Omar Lopez, chief curator of the city of Santiago de Cuba.

The presentation took place at the Curator's Office -former San Basilio Magno Seminar- on July 4th, 2013. The venue was chosen for its being a token of Santiago de Cuba's heritage values and a good case in point of the restoration carried out by cultural institutions following the havoc wreaked by hurricane Sandy in 2012.

In his keynote speech, Mr. Jose Carlos de Santiago said that beyond a recognition to institutions and individuals, the Excelencias Awards also praise the dedication, sacrifice and the safeguarding of cultural and heritage values by the people of Santiago de Cuba.

Issue 116 of the Excelencias magazine was presented by Omar Lopez, chief curator of the city of Santiago de Cuba, who underscored the publication's cultural and tourism-oriented values. The issue sees the light of day as the company is wrapping up its 15th anniversary celebrations, a decade and a half after the magazine premiered during the Fiesta del Fuego in 1997, also in the city of Santiago de Cuba.
