Expotur: Costa Rica Travel Mart 2014
The 29th edition of Expotur will take place from May 14th to May 16th, 2014. This event, which is organized by the Costa Rican Association of Tourism Professionals (Spanish acronym: ACOPROT), will bring together more than 300 tourism and hospitality businesses from across the country and the region for three days of industry insight and networking at the Wyndham Herradura Hotel in San Jose.
According to ACOPROT, the Expotur event attracts many airlines, travel agencies, tour operators, wedding planners, aquatic adventure providers, rental car agencies, and more. This year’s edition of the Expotur Costa Rica Travel Mart will focus on business and convention tourism, scientific tourism, medical tourism, and ecotourism (of course). The Expotur exhibitors represent all the major tourist regions of Costa Rica, Central America and the Caribbean.
Expotur typically welcomes tourism professionals and buyers from North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. For this year’s Expotur will showcase Sustainable Tourism, Beach Resorts, Cultural and Rural Tourism, Adventure Tourism, Holistic Tourism, Educational Tourism, Weddings and Honeymoons, and Business and Convention Visitors.
With regard to sustainability, Expotur has created a credit system to offset the carbon footprint that air travelers may produce on their way to the event. By registering on their website, event participants can figure out how much they would have to pay to offset their air travel carbon emissions.
For example, participants arriving from Belize would pay $5. Those arriving from the United States would have to pay $15, and those from the Netherlands would pay $25. These carbon credits will be used to augment the ongoing reforestation efforts in Costa Rica.
Previous Expotur events have focused on the business and convention travel segment, which has grown considerably in the last two years. Travel and tourism industry observers believe that educational and scientific tourism are poised to experience major growth in Costa Rica over the next few years.
