No Word on Caribbean Airlines Proposed Scale-Down Operations

Jamaica’s Transport Minister, Dr. Omar Davies says he is having challenges getting information from the Trinidadian government on the proposed scaling down of operations at Caribbean Airlines (CAL).

Dr. Davies made the disclosure before the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament last evening, after one Opposition member raised concern about the impact the proposed changes would have on Jamaica.

Former Tourism Minister, Ed Bartlett, questioned whether there was a commitment from CAL regarding the level of service Jamaica should expect following its acquisition of Air Jamaica.

He noted that information he has received, has indicated that CAL is planning to significantly cut flights coming into Jamaica from the region, and major US gateways such as New York and Florida.

Bartlett noted that airlift is critical to Jamaica which depends heavily on tourism. Dr. Davies said the current situation raises several issues, including the use of the Air Jamaica brand.
