PromPeru Awarded Leading South American Tourist Board at World Travel Awards

PromPeru won the prestigious World Travel Award as the ‘Leading South American Tourist Board’ in 2011. The award was presented at the Caribbean and The Americas stage of the World Travel Awards in a Gala Ceremony held on 19 October 2011 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Peru was competing alongside the tourist boards of Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.

Described by the Wall Street Journal as the ‘Travel industry's equivalent to the Oscars’, the World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge excellence in the world's travel and tourism industry and is one of the most comprehensive and prestigious awards. The Caribbean & The Americas Gala Ceremony marks the fifth and final leg of World Travel Awards 2011 Grand Tour, following heats in Dubai, UAE; Antalya, Turkey; Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt; and Bangkok, Thailand. Regional winners from these events progress to the Grand Final at the end of 2011.

Maria del Carmen de Prepares, Director of PromPeru, received the award and stated, "We are extremely pleased to have won this prestigious award and I thank everyone who voted for us to get to this stage. I also wish to thanks the PromPeru team and all our partners, who have worked so hard and made this possible. We have a dedicated, creative and hardworking team both in Lima and overseas, who have worked arduously over the past year promoting the diversity of our country.”

Peru received further accolades as its leading icon, Machu Picchu, was hailed as ‘South America’s Leading Green Destination’, for the second year, and the Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport also won on the South America’s Leading Airport category.
