Volaris to Offer Twice-Weekly Direct Service between Phoenix and Hermosillo

However the city Phoenix announced Wednesday that Mexican carrier Volaris will fly direct flights between the Arizona capital and Hermosillo, Mexico twice a week beginning Nov. 3.

"Volaris’ new direct route between Hermosillo and Phoenix increases our connectivity with our No. 1 trading partner," said Phoenix Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela via the Journal. "This is a critical component in our comprehensive plan to grow trade and increase economic cooperation."

The new flight signals Volaris' third international route out of Phoenix Sky Harbor, with the Mexico City-based airline offering service between Phoenix and Guadalajara and Phoenix and Mexico City.

Volaris also joins US Airways in offering direct flights between Phoenix and Hermosillo.

Volaris' upcoming service signals a step forward in recent efforts to increase business between Arizona and Mexico. Phoenix Sky Harbor's assistant director of aviation Deborah Ostreicher told the Journal that the airport has been working alongside the Arizona Office of Tourism in an effort to increase visitation to the Grand Canyon State.

"This new flight is an excellent example of efforts moving forward," said Ostreicher.

Citing a 2012 Arizona State University study, the Journal reported that visitors arriving on nonstop international flights from Mexico combined to spend nearly $42 million in 2011.
