The Caribbean hotel sector is continuing a very solid 2015, according to the latest report from STR Inc. The region’s hotel occupancy was 75.7 percent in July, a 3.6 percent year-over-year increase over the same month in 2014.
Thompson Hotels is expanding to the Caribbean. The company announced the planned opening of its new Thompson Playa del Carmen this fall on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the brand’s first hotel in the Caribbean region.
The Nayara hotel chain, based in Costa Rica, broke ground earlier this month on a luxury hotel in Orocovis in the Toro Verde Adventure Park in the Toro Verde mountain range of central Puerto Rico.

The Caribbean-Mexico Hotel Construction Pipeline is up to 167 hotels and 29,113 rooms, according to the latest STR Construction Pipeline report. That represented a 3.5 percent increase.
