United Begins Starlink Installation on Regional Aircraft

United Airlines has announced the successful installation of Starlink on its first regional aircraft, marking a significant step in enhancing in-flight connectivity. The airline has detailed the technical advantages of the SpaceX-powered system, emphasizing its lighter weight, faster installation process, and reduced maintenance requirements. This move aligns with United’s broader strategy to upgrade its fleet with next-generation connectivity solutions.
Starting in May 2025, United plans to equip over 40 regional aircraft per month with Starlink, aiming to complete more than 300 installations by year’s end. The installation process takes an average of just eight hours, making it 10 times faster than traditional in-flight connectivity systems. Unlike previous installations that could sideline an aircraft for over 10 days, United expects each plane to be out of service for only four days, minimizing operational disruptions.
United has highlighted several operational and efficiency benefits of Starlink. The system’s 85-pound weight is significantly lighter than competing in-flight connectivity kits, which can weigh up to 300 pounds. This weight reduction contributes to fuel efficiency, reducing overall operating costs. Additionally, Starlink’s electronically steered design, with no moving parts, simplifies installation and maintenance, making it a more streamlined and cost-effective solution.
Passengers flying on Starlink-equipped regional aircraft will experience Wi-Fi speeds of up to 250 Mbps, which is 50 times faster than current speeds available on United’s regional fleet. This upgrade allows travelers to enjoy seamless streaming, fast downloads, and enhanced onboard entertainment—all at no additional cost. Additionally, Starlink’s inter-satellite laser link technology ensures uninterrupted connectivity, even in adverse weather conditions.
Grant Milstead, United’s VP of Digital Technology, emphasized the company’s commitment to rapid innovation, stating that Starlink’s advanced capabilities and United’s skilled technical team have made this rollout possible at an unprecedented pace. Ultimately, United plans to expand Starlink to its entire fleet, reinforcing its leadership in delivering the fastest and most reliable Wi-Fi experience in the airline industry.
