The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) released a new report today recommending a six‑step plan to tackle destination overcrowding ahead of its Global Summit in Rome.

With international travel at peak levels, many popular spots are experiencing strain on infrastructure, which affects both residents and visitors .

WTTC’s six‑step strategy includes: better data‑driven planning, visitor caps, off‑peak incentives, community engagement, transport improvements, and strict environmental safeguards.

The goal is to secure sustainable growth, ensure high-quality traveler experiences, and prevent the degradation of natural and cultural sites.

WTTC’s CEO stressed that without such strategies, destinations risk repeating the mistakes of mass tourism in past decades.

This initiative comes as governments and local authorities face growing pressure to balance tourism revenue with resident wellbeing and ecosystem protection.
