Caribbean Media Exchange, and U.S.V.I. Government Unite to Support Jamaica’s Hurricane Recovery
The Caribbean Media Exchange (CMEx) has partnered with the Government of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) to launch a fundraising initiative supporting Jamaica’s recovery following the devastating passage of Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category Five storm that caused extensive humanitarian and infrastructure damage across the island.
The initiative is being coordinated through Teri Helenese, the USVI Director of State–Federal Relations and Washington Representative, who is facilitating collaboration between government agencies, regional partners and private-sector allies committed to accelerating relief efforts.
Bevan Springer, President of CMEx, emphasized that the partnership reflects the region’s tradition of unity and collective response in times of need. “In moments of crisis, the Caribbean must stand as One Caribbean,” Springer said. He highlighted CMEx’s commitment to supporting regional recovery efforts, noting that the organization previously mobilized aid for St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the 2021 volcanic eruption.
Springer’s communications firm, Marketplace Excellence Corporation, has extensive experience in disaster response. The company supported the USVI government during the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, coordinating communications and recovery messaging as the islands worked to rebuild critical infrastructure.
For Helenese, the initiative speaks to a shared regional identity and enduring resilience. “We are one Caribbean family, connected by history, culture and an unbreakable spirit,” she said. “In the U.S. Virgin Islands, we know the fear and uncertainty that storms bring — but we also know the resilience that emerges from our people.”
The effort has already drawn support from key regional and philanthropic partners. Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, noted that the campaign is receiving assistance from prominent relief organizations including Food For The Poor, American Friends of Jamaica and World Central Kitchen. Clarke said immediate priorities include humanitarian and medical response, with a transition toward rebuilding efforts focused on strengthening healthcare and education infrastructure.
The U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel & Tourism Association, led by its president Lisa Hamilton, has also joined the initiative, reinforcing the tourism industry's commitment to Jamaica’s recovery. All funds raised through the campaign will go directly to efforts on the ground. Contributions can be made through cmexmedia.org/jamaica, and 100% of donations will be remitted to support communities affected by Hurricane Melissa.
