After years of anticipation, AmaWaterways has officially launched its first-ever river cruise on Colombia’s Magdalena River, marking a major step forward for both the cruise line and the country’s tourism industry. The debut of the AmaMagdalena, originally slated for November 2024, was rescheduled to April 2025 to fine-tune the experience and ensure exceptional quality.

The AmaMagdalena accommodates just 60 guests, offering a boutique experience crafted with the help of Colombian artisans. Its design includes locally inspired elements, while the staterooms – ranging from 237 to 516 square feet – feature the line’s signature twin-balcony layout for panoramic views of the vibrant landscape.

Among the onboard amenities are a Sun Deck pool, a fitness room, a Main Restaurant serving Latin American and Western cuisine, and a specialty al fresco dining venue, all tailored to reflect the region’s character and hospitality.

Two unique seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia, will take guests between Cartagena and Barranquilla, with a second vessel, the AmaMelodia, set to join the fleet in summer 2025. Travelers can also choose pre- and post-cruise extensions in Medellín, Cartagena, and Panama City.

The company sees this as more than just an expansion. “This launch is about bridging cultures, honoring the rich heritage of the Magdalena River, and empowering local communities,” said co-founder Kristin Karst, who celebrated the joyous response of locals welcoming the ship along its route.
