National Geographic Society to Open Museum of Exploration in 2026
The National Geographic Society has announced plans to launch the Museum of Exploration on its Washington, D.C. campus, scheduled to open in mid-2026.
The new museum will feature immersive exhibitions, a state-of-the-art theater, and Washington’s first outdoor nighttime experience. It aims to showcase the Society's mission of exploration, conservation, and education, offering visitors a unique chance to connect with the wonders of the world.
CEO Jill Tiefenthaler highlighted the museum as a pivotal project that will bring National Geographic's mission to life, offering unforgettable experiences. Visitors will explore exhibitions like the Rolex Explorers Landing and engage in immersive fieldwork simulations, deepening their connection to the world’s natural and cultural wonders. A 400-seat theater will present National Geographic films, while an outdoor courtyard will feature breathtaking visual displays.
The museum is designed with inclusivity in mind, offering resources such as tactile maps, Braille text, and multilingual exhibits. It will also include wellness rooms and all-gender restrooms to ensure an accessible experience for all. Education will be central to the museum's mission, with school groups encouraged to develop critical thinking skills inspired by National Geographic’s legacy of exploration.
The project is a collaborative effort involving JLL, HITT Contracting, and Hickok Cole. With over 100,000 square feet, the museum aims to make a lasting impact on the Washington, D.C. community and visitors from around the world, promoting a sense of global stewardship.
Jean Case, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasized the museum’s role in inspiring the next generation of explorers. Visitors will be encouraged to engage with the environment, fostering a lifelong commitment to exploration and conservation.
