Rescuers Locate Bodies of Italian Divers in Maldives Cave
Rescuers have located the bodies of four Italian divers who went missing inside a deep underwater cave system in the Maldives, Italy's Foreign Ministry confirmed Monday.
The discovery ends a perilous multi-day search operation in the Vaavu Atoll that was briefly suspended over the weekend following the tragic death of a local military diver.
The four individuals were part of a group of five Italian nationals who died during a private excursion on Thursday. The team descended to a depth of approximately 50 meters (164 feet) to explore the complex cave system, significantly exceeding the local recreational diving limit of 30 meters (98 feet).
The body of the fifth victim, diving instructor Gianluca Benedetti, was recovered near the mouth of the cave shortly after the incident. The remaining four victims have been identified by authorities as:
- Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of marine ecology at the University of Genoa.
- Giorgia Sommacal, her 22-year-old daughter.
- Muriel Oddenino, a marine biologist and researcher.
- Federico Gualtieri, a recent graduate and researcher.
Montefalcone and Oddenino were in the archipelago on an official scientific mission to study the effects of climate change on tropical biodiversity, though university officials clarified the fatal dive was conducted privately.
A Perilous Recovery Operation
The recovery efforts faced severe complications. On Saturday, Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian National Defense Force, died from decompression sickness after a high-risk dive to map the cavern.
Following his death and bouts of rough weather, the Maldives Coastguard enlisted the help of specialized Finnish cave diving experts to execute a new strategy. Teams finally breached the inner chambers of the cave on Monday to locate the remaining bodies.
Local authorities and maritime experts are investigating the exact cause of the disaster, focusing on potential underwater desorientation within the sediment-heavy caverns or a mechanical failure involving contaminated air supply. The Maldivian government has called the incident the worst scuba diving accident in the country's history.
