Search Intensifies for American Woman Swept to Sea in Abaco Islands
Authorities in the Bahamas are currently conducting a massive search-and-rescue operation for an American tourist who disappeared Saturday night after falling from a small vessel.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the woman was traveling with her husband in an eight-foot, hard-bottom dinghy near Great Abaco Island. The couple was reportedly in transit from Hope Town to Elbow Cay when the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. local time.
The husband informed investigators that his wife fell overboard while holding the boat's ignition keys, which caused the engine to immediately shut off. Without power, the vessel became disabled as strong ocean currents quickly carried the woman away. The husband reported that he lost sight of her in the darkness and was unable to reach her as she was swept further into the Atlantic Ocean.
In a desperate attempt to seek help, the husband paddled the small craft for several hours through the night. He finally reached the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, where he alerted a local resident who contacted the police. The identities of the couple have not yet been released by officials, pending further investigation and notification of family members.
The Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town Fire & Rescue have joined local police in scouring the waters surrounding the Abaco chain. Support has also been provided by the U.S. Coast Guard Miami Sector, which deployed aerial assets to assist in the search. Despite these extensive efforts, no sign of the missing woman or the ignition keys has been discovered as of Monday afternoon.
This disappearance comes amid heightened concerns regarding maritime safety in the region. The U.S. State Department currently maintains a Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas, specifically warning that boating is not well-regulated and that injuries or deaths have occurred in similar circumstances. Officials have urged travelers to exercise increased caution when utilizing small watercraft between the islands.
Local authorities are appealing to the public for any information that might assist in the investigation. Witnesses or anyone who may have been in the area of Hope Town on Saturday evening are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers. As the search enters its third day, the mission remains categorized as a rescue operation, though officials acknowledge the significant challenges posed by the region's powerful tides.
