(AP) - Katy Perry's latest music video has sparked controversy in Spain, where the pop star is depicted enjoying the picturesque Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. The issue? Some scenes were filmed in a protected natural area without proper authorization.

The regional government is investigating the video for Perry's new song, “Lifetimes,” which includes footage of the 39-year-old American singer running and jumping across the dunes of Ses Salines Natural Park. This protected area spans the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, and it appears that filming took place without the necessary permits.

The controversy centers around the dunes on the private islet of S’Espalmador, which is described as "one of the most ecologically valuable sites on the islands." The area is typically off-limits to the public and is marked by barriers to protect its delicate ecosystem, according to local media reports.

In response to the unauthorized filming, regional authorities have launched "preliminary investigation proceedings," as announced in a statement released Tuesday. The department of natural environment clarified that while filming in such areas can be permitted with proper authorization, the production company did not secure the appropriate documentation.

Universal Music, Perry's label, stated that the local video production company had assured them that all necessary permits were obtained. However, it was later discovered that one permit was still pending. Despite this, the label was reportedly given verbal approval to proceed a day before filming on July 27, according to an email from a label spokesperson to The Associated Press.

The video, directed by Colombian-American photographer and director Matías Vasquez, known as Stillz, features Perry sailing, swimming, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife of the Balearic Islands. These islands are among the most popular and crowded tourist destinations in the Spanish Mediterranean, especially during the summer months.

"We adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area and have the utmost respect for this location and the officials tasked with protecting it," Universal Music stated, expressing their commitment to following local regulations.
