Mexico Launches First Shopping Tourism Project

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Municipality of León (Guanajuato, Mexico) have signed a contract to continue with the country’s first project to build up Shopping Tourism, with the aid of the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Guanajuato.
The project is anticipated to act as an international reference point and as a showcase at all the well-known tourism forums.
The Tourism Observatory of the State of Guanajuato has been a member of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories since 2014.
At the World Tourism Organization’s General Assembly organized in Medellín, Colombia, in September 2015, Guanajuato showed its concern in being one of the destinations to create a project on shopping tourism, and León was the chosen destination in light of the fact that 27% of its tourists visit the city to go shopping.
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency accountable for endorsing responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
The project will support León (Guanajuato, Mexico) to set up innovative shopping tourism offerings that connect the public and private sectors and highlight the tourism attractions and products of the destination as well as tourism’s contribution to socio-economic development, which comprises the creation of jobs directly in the tourism and in the many activities related to the industry.
