Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan will serve as keynote speaker for the first Caribbean Tourism Summit, to be held in Washington from June 21 to 25.

The event is being organized by the Caribbean Tourism Development Co. (CTDC), the marketing and business unit owned jointly by the Caribbean Hotel Association and the Caribbean Tourism Organization. It will focus on the roles of marketing and investment in Caribbean tourism as well as on other industries, including agriculture, construction and aviation.

Greenspan’s experience with the Federal Reserve and his continued influence “offer the opportunity to provide valuable insights for a region that continues to grow and evolve in its economic power,” according to Allen Chastanet, co-chairman of the CTDC.

Tourism is a “pivotal industry” for the Caribbean, Chastanet said, “and it’s no coincidence that we’re holding the summit in the national capital of our largest source of business, the U.S.”

The summit is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants from government, tourism, investment and financial services sectors, including high-ranking officials of more than 30 Caribbean countries, according to Peter Odle, the CTDC’s co-chair.

“We will address key issues and solutions that will increase tourism and investment revenue in the region,” Odle said.

The summit, which coincides with Caribbean American Heritage Month in June, will feature an awards dinner, an exhibit and events to honor the Caribbean diaspora.
