Argentina to host Spanish Language Congress

The Third International Congress on the Spanish Language will take place in the Argentina city of Rosario on Nov. 2004 under a slogan reading Linguistic Identity and Globalization.

The list of would-be personalities attending the event includes Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes, Argentina’s Hector Tizon and Spanish intellectual Francisco Ayala, let alone a good deal of philologists, mass media organizations and scholars.

Attendants will have the chance of mulling over the ongoing situation of the Spanish language and the many social challenges pounding the world’s second tongue with a view to build some momentum, and make governments and institutions aware of their responsibility toward the unity of the language.

Discussions will hinge on the reality of the region’s countries, exclusion and poverty in Iberian America and the lack of access to economic, cultural and educational opportunities.

In the course of the meeting in Rosario –one of Argentina’s main burgs- academics will unveil the Pan Hispanic Dictionary of Language Doubts and Misuses promoted by the Royal Academy and the Spanish Cervantes Institute. The compilation contains 7,000 entries of frequent doubts on the language.

Organizers are looking forward to turning this conclave into a universal meeting for the Hispanic community to chew over the ongoing situation of the Spanish language in an increasingly globalized world and the challenge posed by technological breakthroughs, officials from the Royal Academy indicated.
