"Le Marche" on Two Wheels: How "NoiMarcheBikeLife" Redefines Slow Travel in Central Italy
by Massimo Terracina
From the Adriatic coast to the peaks of the Sibillini Mountains, an 800-km infrastructure, supported by an integrated network of 31 municipalities and over 200 welcoming establishments, is transforming the Marche region into a new European benchmark for sustainable mobility and experiential tourism.
There is a new way to discover Italy’s only region with a plural aspect: the slow rhythm of pedals cutting through the sea breeze, climbing across clay hills, passing through medieval villages, and ascending toward the majestic peaks of the Apennines.
What was, until a few years ago, merely the dream of a handful of enthusiasts now has a name, an institutional vision, and an extraordinary reach: "NoiMarcheBikeLife".
Born from the strategic alliance of 29 municipalities in the Marche region, with Civitanova Marche serving as the lead partner since 2012, NoiMarcheBikeLife is not just a tourism brand, but a comprehensive territorial ecosystem.
It is a monumental project that perfectly embodies the synthesis between the active spirit of cycle tourism and the "art of living" for which Italy is very well known all over the world.
A green artery between sea and mountains: the "Strade di Marca" cycle route

The beating heart of this "slow" revolution is the "Strade di Marca" cycle route, a permanent, 600-km loop. The itinerary starts on the Adriatic coast, winds its way up the ridges and through the valleys of the Marche region, embraces the Sibillini Mountains, and eventually returns toward the sea. Alongside this major backbone route, there are three dedicated, mapped itineraries for each of the 29 partner municipalities, offering a range of options to suit every level of experience:
-
Iconic and challenging tours: "From the Sea to the Mountains" (7 days, 477 km) for those seeking a complete adventure.
-
Food, wine, and cultural experiences: ranging from the "Bike Wine Tour" (4 days exploring exceptional wineries) to the "Traditions Tour" (focused on ancient crafts).
-
"Slow & Relax" itineraries: such as the "Rurally Slow Tour" and "Pedaling in Silence", designed for immersing oneself in the gentle rhythms of the hilly landscape.
The excellence of the route has already earned significant national acclaim, securing 2nd place at the Italian Cycle Tourism Awards (Italian Green Road Award 2022) and becoming part of the national "Le Vie del Bike" (Bike Routes) project, promoted by the Ministry of Tourism and ENIT (Italian national promotion organisation).
Widespread hospitality and technology at the traveler's service

The true strength of "NoiMarcheBikeLife" lies in its ability to combine the natural landscape with an outstanding hospitality infrastructure.
More than 200 establishments, including "Bike Hotels" and partner businesses, have been specially equipped and certified to meet every need of the cyclist.
The on-the-road experience is supported by innovative tools and a touch of old-world charm:
-
A bilingual, geolocalized web app: provides direct access via smartphone to elevation data, points of interest, and GPX tracks.
-
Interactive tourist signage: installed in every municipality within the network to help travelers find their way in real time.
-
The "Cyclotourist’s Passport": a delightful memento of your rides through the Marche region, a complimentary paper passport to be stamped at each stage of your journey. Completing it offers not only indelible memories and local discounts, but also the iconic official jersey of the circuit.
An international vision, from Italy to Europe

The value of the project quickly transcended regional borders, earning features in major industry media, including National Geographic, Alvento (Destinations), and the RAI television programs Sulla Strada (RAI News 24) and Geo (Rai 3).
However, NoiMarcheBikeLife goes well beyond mere tourism promotion; it serves as a social and cultural manifesto. Through initiatives like "I Respect the Cyclist" developed in collaboration with champion cyclist Paola Gianotti, the organization promotes a culture of road safety in schools and on the roads.
This vision reached its pinnacle with the "Bike Long Ride Marche – Europe": a 1,700-kilometer journey by bicycle to Brussels, aimed at bringing the Marche region’s model of sustainability to the European Parliament. The ride was spearheaded by Mauro Fumagalli, who, alongside the Miconi sisters, serves as the driving force behind the project’s practical execution.
Cycling in the Marche region today means becoming part of this story, a journey that blends well-being, natural beauty, warm hospitality, and a commitment to the future.
