Carnival celebrations in Brazil from February 2 to 5 will draw huge crowds and disrupt transportation nationwide, particularly in Rio de Janeiro.

Allow extra travel time and expect an increased police presence. Carnival is a major cultural event in Brazil, and the large crowds it generates could lead to isolated violence.

Crowds will begin to increase during the preliminary festivities in many parts of Brazil, especially in Rio. Expect crowded conditions at restaurants, tourist attractions and near Carnival-related events.

Hotels may be fully booked. Transportation delays (public transportation and air travel) are likely, and taxis may be difficult to hire due to increased demand.
