The Foreign Office confirmed last week it had chartered an aircraft to help with the evacuation of independent travelers trapped in hurricane-hit Cancun

Work continues to ensure that tour operators max out departure opportunities for British travelers there. Flights have been leaving Cancun and Merida airports since last week and many operators already have aircraft positioned throughout the area, ready to depart when airport traffic allows.

Up to 2,000 of the estimated 8,000 British holidaymakers who were in Cancun when the hurricane struck have already been evacuated, with a further 2,000 expected to leave throughout today, depending on the conditions on the ground.
