Cancun Gets Juicy Shot in the Arm
Three new tourist projects will be built in Cancun at a price tag of $3.5 billion. Mexican President Vicente Fox laid down the first brick of the Riviera Cancun, a megabuck project that includes a 36-hole golf course and as many as 3,778 hotel rooms.
According to estimates provided by the National Tourism Development Fund, this huge investment will create 5,000 new full-time jobs in hotels, let alone 9,500 part-time posts for other workers.
The two other projects –Puerto Cancun and Mayakoba- will combine for 14,000 new full-time jobs and 26,500 part-time jobs.
The Puerto Cancun project, that should be completed in ten years, will provide facilities to cater to 330 vessels simultaneously, 4,288 hotel rooms and a PGA-certificated golf course.
Last but not least, the Mayakoba development plan –down the Cancun-Chetumal federal highway- will embrace a total surface of 650 acres with facilities for golfers and half a dozen hotels.
