Cruise Ships Back in St. Croix Next Year
For the past few years the economy in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands has been suffering a serious financial setback, mainly because cruise ships have not been visiting that island as in the past. Only three ships were scheduled for the entire 2008.
It now seems as if the drought will end, since it has been reported that 48 ships have requested berthing in Frederiksted in St. Croix in 2009.
The St. Croix Source reported on Monday that, based on the berthing requests, next year’s arrivals will represent a total of 121,768 passengers to the island of St. Croix, along with 43,986 crew members.
The Cruise Ship Working Group discussed with cruise lines at the Shipping Convention last March about increased service to St. Croix, and underscores travelers’ desire for a Caribbean port of call that is “not like the rest” and feedback from the cruise lines seeking a distinct marketing identity for St. Croix.
