Cuba Hopes to Have 29 Golf Courts by 2016

Based on the growth of the tourism industry, Cuban authorities of the sector hope to have 29 golf courts throughout the island over the next 15 years.

New legislation bears out the strategies allowing for greater expansion of the industry, while the Ministry of Tourism (MINTUR) branches out the tourism offerings to include more specialized areas, such as golf.

One of the new regulations is to extend from 50 to 99 years the right of foreign investors to use government lands for tourism activities.

The director of Development and Business of Palmares Company, Sandino Fernandez, said that Cuba has two golf courses: The Varadero Golf Club in Varadero beach and another one in Capdevila, in Havana.

The first mentioned is the most important golf course on the island and it is among the most attractive in the Caribbean, with 18 holes, 69 hectares and excellent conditions in its environment, as well as in the hotel and tourist infrastructure.

Local authorities are working to achieve a midterm objective of 29 courses throughout the nation, especially in Havana, the northern keys of Ciego de Avila, Holguin, Cienfuegos and Sancti Spiritus.
