A couple of major projects dealing with tourism –the enhancement of the Tegucigalpa International Airport and development plans for the Tela Bay- were presented as potential investment areas to a group of Spanish businesspeople.

The Tela Bay is a protected natural zone that extends along the northern shoreline where four hotels and a 27-hole golf course are being built. The first project alone will take an estimated $100 million.

The information was revealed at the end of a meeting between Spanish and Honduran entrepreneurs in Madrid presided over by Spain’s Trade & Industry Minister Norman Garcia. The gathering also intended to promote the Fourth Spain-Central American Entrepreneurial Meeting scheduled for November in Tegucigalpa.

Honduras’ trade and industry minister took advantage of this opportunity to mention his country’s travel industry, furniture, fabrics, farming and infrastructure as “the most attractive areas in Honduras for Spanish financiers.”

For his part, Mr. Garcia said there are huge development perspectives in tourism “not only for Honduras, but also for the entire Central American region,” and called on Spaniards to pour money into the woodcutting sector, penciled in as “one of the greatest opportunities for Spain in the region.”
