IMF Calls on Grenada to Buttress Ties Between Tourism, Agriculture
Citing the enormous benefit it will bring, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is recommending Grenada to directly link its agriculture industry to the tourism industry.
Prakash Loungani, the mission chief for the team that recently conducted Article IV Consultation in Grenada, said there is plenty of room to strengthening the linkage between agriculture and tourism, which will remain the mainstay of the economy.
The relationship between both industries has been the topic of many seminars, conferences, workshop and initiatives. The most recent is the setting up of an environmental Waste Plant for the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA) and that project appears to be the one that result in at least one successful product.
Grenada is currently the world´s largest producer of nutmegs. It is the only spice symbol on Grenada´s national flag and it is often referred to as the island´s black gold. More than 5000 persons work directly with the industry while at least one third of the island´s population benefits from it indirectly.
