MUSIC
INTERNATIONAL JAZZ PLAZA FESTIVAL
Havana and Santiago de Cuba, January 16-20
With the participation of prestigious national and international stars, the Latin or Cuban Jazz has achieved international relevance and become tradition, since outstanding figures show their virtuosity, talent and improvisation capacity. The attendees will enjoy concerts given by Cuban musicians and international guests, bands and soloists. Likewise, a colloquium and debates will be carried out on the genre, Jam sessions, as well as other cultural activities related to jazz on the island and overseas.
SONIDO CAMAGUEYANO
Camaguey, February 9-10
Event organized by Camaguey-born musicianManolito Simonet. It aims at establishing a connection between young people and such rhythms as son and timba, as well as other representatives of popular music. The performances of orchestras from the Cuban capital are complemented by such bands as Conjunto Artístico Maraguán, Rumbatá, Maravilla de Florida, Ritmo Moderno, Sabor Cubano and Acheré.
INTERNATIONAL SALSA FESTIVAL
Havana’s Metropolitan Park, February 14-19
After the undeniable success of its first editions, Havana will be hosting the 4th Salsa Festival, with the attendance of popular dance music bands, in a bid to foster Cuban popular music and its values from Cuba and for the world.
GUILLERMO BARRETO IN MEMORIAM “FIESTA DEL TAMBOR” INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Havana, March 4-10
This event will be attended by outstanding national and international musicians and percussionists, Cuba’s main popular dance music bands, the country’s flagship dance companies, jazz bands and folklore groups. Moreover, Master Classes will be given on Percussion and Dance. The event will also include two International Contests. The first one is related to Percussion, for all ages, and the second Casino dance contest will be accepting local and international competitors, ages 15+.
CASA DE LAS AMERICAS COMPOSITION AWARD
Casa de las Americas, Havana, April 8-12
This award stimulates and spreads the latest representatives of symphonic, chamber and choral music from Latin America and the Caribbean.
LITERATURE
Casa de las Americas, Havana, January 21-31
Casa de las Americas has announced a new edition of the most prestigious literary awards on the continent. This year’s edition engulfs all genres of Latin American and Caribbean literature.
INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR
Morro-Cabaña Historic Military Complex, Havana, February 7-17
Dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Havana and the 60th of the Cuban Revolution. The Fair offers a space to participate and share experiences with entities involved in the universe of publications, as well as authors, editors, distributors, printers, literary agents, multimedia producers, journalists and other professionals.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM
Hemingway Museum House, Havana, June 20-23
The event takes place at Ernest Hemingway museum house, “Finca Vigía”, in Havana’s San Francisco de Paula neighborhood, where the writer authored one of its most famous novels, “The Old Man and the Sea”, so he was given the Pulitzer Award in 1953. With an academical approach, it goes deep into the life and work of Literature Nobel Award winner and his friendship with Cuba since the first visit he paid to the island nation back in 1928. This edition’s specific topics are: Hemingway, Citizen of the World; Ernest Hemingway as Study Subject in Universities around the Globe; Life and Work; Collections, Foundations, Associations, Projects and Museums, Hemingway in the World
DANCE
INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF BALLET ACADEMIES AND INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S CONTEST
Havana’s National Ballet School, April 14-24
This event is an opportunity to share experiences among specialists, professors, students and dancers from all continents in an effort to promote, foster and develop the study of ballet. It proposes a friendly environment that contributes to the technical and conceptual development of this dance art. The main topics are related to teaching methodologies, techniques, repertoires, as well as other aspects of ballet academic teaching.
SPAIN’S MARK FESTIVAL. 28TH EDITION
Grand Theater of Havana and National Theater of Cuba, April 21-28
A space for dance, music, fine arts, literature, theater, lectures and movies; thus, showing the presence of Spanish roots in Cuban culture and the cultural life and customs of Spain’s provinces and communities.
BAILA EN CUBA
November 17-22. The workshops will be held at the National Art School and Benny More Salon Rosado de la Tropical will be hosting night concerts in Havana.
Baila en Cuba stands as the perfect space to learn and enjoy Cuban dances and music. This event aims at spreading the main Cuban dance rhythms related to “Casino”, by offering masters classes and theoretical practical workshops, given by prestigious professors from the Higher Art Institute. Moreover, the attendees can enjoy night concerts given by the most crowd-gathering Cuban dance music bands, as well as foreign musicians.
AUDIOVISUAL
CAMAGUEY INTERNATIONAL VIDEO ART FESTIVAL
Camaguey, April 22-29
Video art event open to all approaches: digital movies’ audiovisual discourse, performance video and latest trends in terms of contemporary theater, video dance, local memory and image, electroacoustic music and sonorous image, science art and technology in the visual communication of architecture.
INTERNATIONAL NEW LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL
Havana, December 5-12
This is one of the most prestigious movie festivals and it offers an outlook of the audiovisual production on the continent, including the main international representatives in the fields of fiction and documentary. The event comprises the New Latin American Film contest, a contest on scripts and posters, exhibit of movie posters, screening of international fiction products and documentaries, seminars on the movie industry and state-of-the-art technologies, as well as the launch of books and movie music concerts.
FINE ARTS
HAVANA BIENNALE. 13th EDITION.
April 12 - May 12
Contemporary art display that invites creators whose work stands for their national identity. The artworks are showcased throughout the culture system’s exhibition spaces, such as the National Fine Arts Museum, spaces within the Colonial Havana, universities, Morro Cabaña complex. The event fosters the socialization of exhibition projects, urban intervention and other art expressions. This edition’s theme is: dreaming, creating, transforming, collaborating, collaboration networks.
TRADITIONS
ROMERIAS DE MAYO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Holguin, May 2-8
Festival of Young Artists, regional cultures, young art taking the lead, tradition and modernity. During these seven days, young artists from every corner of the planet share experiences, hold colloquiums and public performances, where they show traditions from different latitudes. All artistic expression come on stage so everybody can enjoy them.
CARIBBEAN FESTIVAL. FIESTA DEL FUEGO
Santiago de Cuba, July 3-9
The event gathers all art expressions and the scientific and literary work of people form the region. It is a meeting for representatives of the popular and traditional culture of Cuba and the Caribbean. A theoretical event is held under the title “The Caribbean That Brings Us Together.”
