Hurricane Stan has proven a deadly storm for parts of Central America where many rivers crested their banks, creating dangerous mudslides and flooding, bringing the death toll to more than 100.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Tammy, the 19th-named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, formed October 5 off Florida´s East Coast about 35 miles east of Jacksonville.

The 2005 hurricane season is tied for the second busiest on record since record keeping started in 1851.

The record for tropical storms in one year is 21, set in 1933. For those keeping tabs, all that´s left this year as far as names are concerned are Vince and Wilma (that´ll bring this year up to 21) and then in the names will revert to the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Omega, etc.). Let´s keep our fingers crossed and hope against hope it doesn´t come to that.
