Havana._ The Maria La Gorda International Scuba Diving Center in Cuba’s western province of Pinar del Rio will host this month the PHOTOSUB underwater photography contest.

Sources close to the organizing committee indicated the objective of the event lies in handpicking the best underwater pictures of that area by a jury of experts hailing from Spain, Italy, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.

According to specialists, three major prizes and other minor awards will be up for grabs among contestants vying to take the best snapshots depicting both the wildlife and the environment of sea bottoms in that region of western Cuba –penciled in as one of the world’s top-five spots for photographic scuba diving.

The event will be sponsored in part by Cuban chain Puertosol and a total of 30 teams will dive into the competition.

The Maria La Gorda International Scuba Diving Center –some 300 kilometers from Havana- is outfitted with 38 rooms and an international marina servicing foreign boats and minor vessels docking in from other Cuban seaports.

Comfort and an assortment of options for visitors that includes scuba diving, underwater wildlife watching, fishing in specialized areas and internationally certified diving courses are the name of the game for this tourist facility.
