Puerto Rico Crew Attends the 66th International Billfishing Tournament in Cuba

Among the crews attending the 66th edition of the “Ernest Hemingway” International Billfishing Tournament in Cuba, Caribbean News Digital sat down with a delegation hailing from Puerto Rico’s Ponce.

Roberto Rosado, one of the crew members, said this is his second time in Cuba to attend the fishing tournament. Last year, he said, he really had a wonderful time here.

In a competition designed for tag and release, Mr. Rosado agrees it’s the best way to preserve the species. “They were being killed unnecessarily,” he added.

The Ponce crew is made up of six people and a boat rented in Cuba. “We paid 3,000 CUC (Cuban convertible pesos) for the boat, plus 800 CUC for our registration,” Mr. Rosado explains.

“We recommend everybody to attend this tournament. You really have a great time down here. When in Cuba, we feel like home. It’s really like being in Puerto Rico,” he went on to say.

The 66th International “Ernest Hemingway” Billfishing Tournament will come to a close Saturday with the prizes for the biggest catches.
