St. Croix's Airport Set to Reopen

American Airlines and Caribbean regional carrier Seaborne will resume flights to St. Croix on Thursday. Meanwhile, commercial air service has resumed to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

American service to St. Croix will operate daily from Miami, and Seaborne flights will depart twice per day to St. Croix from its hub in San Juan.

The service resumption follows an announcement made by U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp at a press briefing last Saturday that St. Croix's hurricane-battered airport would open for commercial service Oct. 5. Multiple Caribbean news outlets reported the announcement.

Mapp didn't say which other airlines would immediately re-enter St. Croix, which was battered two weeks ago by Hurricane Maria. Delta, JetBlue and propeller plane operator Cape Air also serve St. Croix.

Commercial flights to Tortola resumed on Monday following the closure of Terrance B. Lettsome Airport on Sept. 5 ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Cape Air is flying to Tortola three times daily from San Juan. Leeward Islands carrier LIAT has also begun limited commercial service to Tortola. Tortola isn't served by major airlines except via codeshares.
