Two Legends of Cuban Music: From Revé to Van Van

The music played by Elio Revé y su Charangón and Juan Formell y los Van Van has left its mark over six generations. These two good “daddy’s boys”, Elito and Samuel, perfectly know the way their paternal figures devoted their lives to two of the greatest Cuban musical projects. That’s the reason why they came together to organize a tribute in the first place and they are now inviting the fans of Van Van and Charangón to enjoy a concert scheduled to take place at the Sports City on September 30.
Playing their songs: there is no better way to go into the work of these two musicians. There is no better way to honor them than putting together the two bands with which both Elio Revé and Juan Formell used to write and still do –thanks to their sons- essential notes of Cuban music.
Although the concert’s first song is going to be played at 8 p.m. on September 30, small-format bands will be sharing their music since 2 p.m., on a stage that’s different from the one used by the Rolling Stones… It is going to be all about rumba, guaguanco, son with all its names… because that’s the origin of the Cuban identity.
Under the artistic direction of Maestro Santiago Alfonso, the show will be included in a DVD produced by Bis Music, record label managed by Cuban holding Artex S.A. This evening will be attended by special guests, with a high-quality repertoire that pays tribute to these musicians. Artex S.A is in charge of the production, with the collaboration of the Culture Ministry, PMM, EBM Marketing Solutions and the government of Havana.
When talking about this project, Elito and Samuel, the present leaders of Cuban Revé and Van Van bands respectively, said “It’s going to be a beautiful tribute. We want it to set the standard.”
They are already inviting the enthusiasts of Cuban dance music, fans of Charangón and Van Van –both are included in Artex S.A’s catalog-, to the great Concert at the Sports City, on September 30.
The audience will certainly go to the concert to dance and sing with Charangón’s musical gems, such as Yo sé que tú sabes que yo sé, La ruñidera, Mi salsa tiene sandunga, No me cojan para eso, El palo de anón and ¿Qué cuento es ese?; while Van Van fans will enjoy Por encima del nivel, El baile del buey cansao, La Habana no aguanta más, El negro no tiene na’, Se acabó el querer, Que le den candela and Esto te pone la cabeza mala.
With Paradiso, Artex S.A.’s cultural tourism agency, you can also acquire tickets for an exclusive area. This is an undoubtedly unique opportunity to travel to Cuba and get to know it through its culture.
