Uruguayans Sign Agreement in Madrid to Receive European Tourists

Tour operators from Uruguay took advantage of FITUR 2005 to ink an agreement with European colleagues, especially from Spain, with a view to promote travel destinations in that South American nation through packages exclusively sold to European tourists.

Authorities in Uruguay estimate some 4,000 European vacationers could travel to Punta del Este, the premier beach destination, during the off-peak season (April through November).

Today, Uruguay is considered an optional destination for a majority of European travelers that trek to Argentina and Brazil.

The agreement opens a window of opportunity for Uruguay to join the list of exclusive travel packages offered by European tour operators.

The idea behind this effort is to urge Europeans traveling to Punta del Este to extend their stays and tour Montevideo, Colonia and other attractive places.
