The Dominican Republic is gunning for both keeping up and strengthening its traditional markets in 2003 with a higher-quality and more varied proposal, showing this is a destination other than sun and beach that guarantees safe tourism and sector investments. Mrs. Miguelina Ortiz de Subervi, assistant to the Dominican Secretary of Tourism, says so in this interview.
With 37 years of service under his belt for Alitalia, Salvatore Avaro is a deep connoisseur of the policies in both the company and the sector. His tenure at Eurofly –a charter group owned by Alitalia- and his experience as director of Customer Services in the KLM-Alitalia joint venture provide him with a global outlook of the sector’s situation, allowing him to implement and develop new marketing policies in his new stint. This has been the case since his coming to Spain and for the two and half years he’s been in the Iberian Peninsula.
To begin with, can you tell us about your career in this realm of tourism? The latest part of my career is linked to Sabena, where I’d been working for the last four years until the company’s disappearance in Spain last December. Prior to that, I worked for Spanair for a couple of years.

I joined Spanair in October 2000, at the request of its front office, to support and execute the strategy of Commercial Alliances and other projects linked to Spanair’s growth and evolution as a top-rated airline with a global profile. Before this magnificent opportunity came my way, I worked for United Airlines in different areas such as operational planning, passenger services, marketing, plus a last stint as head of Commercial Alliance programs for Europe and Latin America. I’ve been linked to the sector since 1986, serving in different international airlines.
Featuring an original outlay, remarkable historical values, a new architectural design, and right after undergoing a refurbishing process that took one million dollars worth of investments, the Club Amigo Plus Varadero Hotel will reopen its doors in the first half of December.
