A powerful winter storm sweeping across the northeastern United States has caused significant disruptions at major airports, leading to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays. The severe weather, which brought a mix of snow and ice, has particularly affected air travel in New York and Philadelphia.
As of Thursday morning, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) reported 115 flight cancellations, representing approximately 16% of its scheduled departures. In addition, 24 flights were delayed due to icy conditions. Meanwhile, in New York, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) recorded 46 cancellations—about 8% of its total operations—while John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Newark Liberty International Airport also experienced disruptions.
The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for parts of northeast New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, and southern Connecticut, warning of up to two inches of snow and ice accumulation. The hazardous conditions prompted officials to urge travelers to check with their airlines for updated flight information and consider alternative transportation.
Airlines, including major carriers such as American Airlines, Delta, and United, have issued travel waivers, allowing passengers to rebook flights without additional fees. However, airport authorities warned that continued snowfall and freezing rain could prolong delays throughout the day.
Beyond aviation, the winter storm has impacted road travel, with authorities advising commuters to exercise caution during the morning rush hour. Public transportation systems in affected cities have also experienced minor delays due to the icy conditions.
With meteorologists predicting continued freezing temperatures, travelers are advised to monitor weather updates and plan accordingly as the region braces for further disruptions.
