The holiday travel season officially launched today as AAA issued its definitive forecast projecting that 45 million Americans will journey at least 50 miles from home between May 21 and May 25. This historic volume establishes a new all-time Memorial Day travel record, pushing past the 44.8 million benchmark set in 2025.

The data confirms that 39.1 million people intend to navigate the roads by automobile, while domestic airports are preparing to process 3.66 million fliers over the five-day period.

This record-breaking migration is a mechanical necessity for the automotive and hospitality sectors to monitor, as 87% of all holiday trips will rely on highway networks.

Transportation data provider INRIX warned that the worst highway congestion will manifest on Thursday and Friday afternoons between 3:00 PM and 6:00 PM, with major metropolitan transit times expected to nearly double. Conversely, Sunday, May 24 is projected to experience minimal traffic impact, rendering it the most efficient window for regional road travel.

For the 2026 holiday road-tripper, executing a journey requires precise timing to bypass major bottlenecks. AAA booking metrics reveal that Orlando, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles stand as the highest-demand domestic automotive markets, while regular unleaded gasoline prices average a steep $4.53 per gallon nationwide.

Travelers are strongly urged to schedule departures before 11:00 AM on Friday or delay highway entry until after 9:00 PM on Thursday to maintain reliable arrival schedules.
