Airbnb is expanding its footprint in Africa with a focus on rural destinations through a new initiative called “Rooted Retreats”. This program will launch first in Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa, offering travelers unique opportunities to stay in traditional homes, learn local crafts, and take part in community-based tourism.

The initiative was developed in collaboration with local NGOs, tourism boards, and artisan cooperatives. Its goal is to offer an alternative to conventional tourism by emphasizing cultural exchange, economic inclusion, and sustainable practices. Travelers booking through Rooted Retreats will be able to explore village life, experience indigenous cuisines, and participate in daily rituals with host families.

To ensure quality and safety, Airbnb is providing training programs for local hosts, covering hospitality standards, digital tools, and financial literacy. The platform will also support hosts with professional photography and promotional materials to boost visibility.

“This is about more than accommodation. It’s about creating real connections between travelers and communities while driving equitable tourism development,” said Airbnb’s regional director for Africa. The company believes the model could generate thousands of micro-businesses across the continent.

The move aligns with growing global demand for authentic travel experiences that move beyond traditional tourist routes. Studies have shown that travelers, especially from Europe and North America, are seeking deeper engagement with local cultures.

Airbnb’s expansion into rural Africa comes at a time when many governments on the continent are prioritizing community tourism as part of their economic diversification and poverty alleviation strategies. Rooted Retreats is expected to expand to Uganda, Namibia, and Rwanda by late 2026.
