UN Tourism and its members are celebrating the establishment of 2027 as the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.

At the organization's headquarters in Madrid, UN Tourism leadership welcomed ambassadors to Spain from 24 member states to discuss the year ahead. Among the dignitaries were His Excellency Farrukh Tursunov, Ambassador of Uzbekistan, which sponsored the resolution, and Rosario Sánchez Grau, Secretary of State for Tourism of Spain.

The resolution, adopted by 86 member states at the UN General Assembly in February, highlights the importance of tourism in driving development and opportunity. UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasized the collective effort in adopting the resolution, noting that it underscores tourism’s potential for fostering development and opportunity while ensuring sustainable and resilient growth.

Pololikashvili stated, “The adoption of the Resolution to proclaim 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism was a joint achievement. So it is only right we come together today to celebrate it.” He added that the year will showcase tourism’s unique ability to drive development and opportunity while ensuring the sector’s growth remains sustainable and resilient against future challenges.

The UN General Assembly resolution calls on UN Tourism to lead the organization and implementation of the International Year in collaboration with governments, relevant UN organizations, international and regional bodies, and other stakeholders. This collaborative effort aims to address tourism's current and future challenges, ensuring it contributes positively to global development goals.

The celebration in Madrid marked a significant step towards this initiative, bringing together key stakeholders to strategize and plan for the International Year. The focus will be on making tourism a powerful tool for sustainable development and resilience, capable of withstanding and adapting to future shocks and challenges.
