The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and Tourism HR Canada have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at fostering the growth of a skilled and sustainable tourism workforce in both regions.

The agreement, announced at the recent Tourism Labor Market Forum in Ottawa, builds on the long-standing tourism connections between the Caribbean and Canada. It highlights the organizations’ commitment to workforce development, recognizing that the success and competitiveness of the tourism industry depend on its ability to attract and retain skilled professionals.

Key Aspects of the Collaboration

  • Information Sharing: Both organizations will continue sharing labor market insights, with mutual invitations to participate in events and committees.

  • Capacity Building and Skills Transfer: Joint training initiatives will enhance workforce skills and promote knowledge-sharing, aiming to develop best practices in sustainable tourism.

  • Leveraging Resources: The CTO will adapt Tourism HR Canada’s competency library and certification credentials for the Caribbean, while both organizations exchange proprietary learning content.

  • New Technology Platform: A platform will be developed to host and manage the tourism competency library.

  • International Benchmarking: Continuous collaboration will improve global competitiveness and workforce development programs.

Sharon Banfield-Bovell, CTO’s Director of Resource Mobilization and Development, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration with Tourism HR Canada allows us to strengthen our tourism workforce and foster opportunities for knowledge exchange that will benefit both regions.”
